Why I started learning this

After college, I found myself in a long stretch of not knowing what to do next. I hadn’t chosen a field I cared about, the work I found afterward did not hold my interest, and I had no clear idea what to study if I went back to school. I’m still doing temporary work while I try to work out what kind of life and work might actually suit me.

Somewhere in that uncertainty, I started looking at Chinese systems of divination. People often reach for some larger framework when ordinary answers stop feeling sufficient. For me, it was BaZi—also called the Four Pillars of Destiny—and Liu Yao. I’m not sure I expect them to point me toward one clear path. Part of what keeps me interested is the possibility that studying them might give me another way to ask questions about my own life.

What I keep running into

The more I read, the less simple the tradition becomes. Some texts have been lost. Others have passed through centuries of additions, commentaries, and mistakes. Different schools preserve different ideas, and sometimes those ideas directly contradict one another.

So when I come across a sentence in an old text, I cannot always begin by asking what it means. I first have to ask whether the sentence is reliable, and then which explanation deserves my trust. I often get stuck there. I read, take notes, change my mind, and sometimes have to rewrite the notes I thought I had already understood.

What I’m doing here

This site is where I’m keeping track of that process in English: what I find in the texts, how I’m making sense of the methods, and where my understanding still falls short. I’ll write about BaZi (the Four Pillars of Destiny), Liu Yao, and the questions that come up while trying to learn them seriously without pretending that the tradition is simpler or more certain than it is.
